The Orland Park Police Department’s annual Citizens’ Police Academy is now accepting registrations. The two-day program happens Saturday, Sept. 12 and 19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Orland Park Police Department, 15100 Ravinia Avenue.

The two, eight-hour sessions are geared toward Orland Park adults looking to learn more about the inner-workings of the OPPD, including patrol operations, dispatch, general investigations, forensics, use of force, the K-9 unit and much more.

“The Citizens’ Academy gives residents a better understanding of our police department and how policing works in Orland Park,” said Mayor Dan McLaughlin. “This is also a great opportunity for anyone considering a career in law enforcement, but I encourage interested residents to come out and learn more about our hard-working police department.”

Registration is required for the academy, which is free of charge and open to adults ages 18 and older. Residents must pass a basic background check in order to attend the two-day event.

“The department is proud to offer this yearly event. We realize many residents may not fully know how local policing works and this opens the door to better understand the ins and outs of our day-to-day operations,” said Police Chief Tim McCarthy. “Residents will also receive hands-on experience that may be helpful in choosing a career in law enforcement.”

Space is limited so early registration is advised. Lunch is provided by the Village of Orland Park.

“If residents have questions or concerns about our police department, attending this two-day training is a great way to meet your local police officers and get a better idea of how public safety is handled in Orland Park,” said Trustee Dan Calandriello, Public Safety Committee Chair.

To register, residents can pick up an application at the Orland Park Police Station, 15100 Ravinia Avenue or call 708/364-8149.
