Village's Farmers' Market Offers Small Town Sharm

Orland Park's Farmers Market takes visitors back to the town's early years when area farmers would travel into town to sell their produce.

An Orland Park summer favorite, the village's Farmers' Market is a Friday morning destination. This year brings another season of fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers and potted plants, bakery items, jams, jellies, gourmet foods, spices, jewelry, stained glass, personal care items, kitchenware and more. Eight new vendors have joined the more than 40 vendors for the 2011 season.

Held outdoors at the Orland Park Village Center, the market opened for the season on Friday, June 3 and will remain open until Friday, October 7. The Orland Park Village Center is located at 14700 South Ravinia Avenue, one block west of LaGrange Road/US Route 45.

"Orland Park enjoys a rich history with a strong sense of community," said Orland Park Village Trustee Kathleen Fenton, who first proposed the market. "We created the Farmers' Market to bring back the small town charm from Orland Park's past," she explained.

Farmer Frank's Barbecue Lunches
During the summer months, June through mid-August, Farmer Frank's Barbecue Lunches are available for purchase. Named for the village's Parks & Buildings Director Frank Stec, the lunch time fare includes hot dogs, hamburgers, bratwursts and grilled chicken sandwiches.

"We started the barbecue lunches because of the number of area workers who were shopping on their lunch hours," Stec explained. The nominally priced packaged lunch includes a choice of entrée, pop or water, chips and a cookie.

It is also through mid-August that the Orland Park Public Library holds story times at the Farmer's Market.

Community Groups Raise Funds At Lunch
A different community group hosts the fundraising barbecue lunch each week. The sponsoring agency purchases the food items and enlists volunteers to cook and work the booth.

"We've always had a great time hosting the barbecue lunch," said Orland Park Theatre Troupe Producer/Director Frann Carnivele-Sidlow.

"Theater people never shy away from a crowd --- be it an audience or hungry people waiting to buy lunch," she said smiling.

"Working the Farmers' Market lunch helps to publicize the village's theater program and all that we're doing," Carnivele-Sidlow said, adding that proceeds from the theatre troupe's sales are used to purchase extras for upcoming productions.

Colorful Offerings
"The Farmers' Market is truly a seasonal event," Fenton said. "We begin in the summer with the early June produce and flowers, run through the summer with a multitude of offerings and wrap up in October with pumpkins and gourds," she said.

Orland Park's market is open Friday mornings from 7:30 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. through October 7. This year there will be no market on August 5 as staff prepares for that weekend's "Taste of Orland Park."
