Posted on 09/07/2017

Calling all bards, lyricists and modern day beatniks - Orland Park's Poetry Slam is back and set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 23.

Poets of all ages and skills are invited to bring their best original imagery and rhymes to the village's Cultural Center, 14760 S. Park Lane.

Cost is $5 to get in or $3 for those participating. Tickets are available at the door.

"This is the second Poetry Slam we are running and it is sponsored by the Village of Orland Park's Art Commission," said Jean Petrow, program supervisor for the Recreation Department. "Participants are invited to recite their original compositions - known as 'spitting.' Audience participation is one of the things that makes this event so much fun to attend."

Patti Brucki, an Orland Park resident and seasoned "slammer," will once again be hosting the all-ages event. Brucki teaches in District 205, runs many poetry and speech events, and was named "coach of the year" for coaching various speech and poetry events.

There are no age restrictions, but all poetry must have family-friendly content.

"There will be small prizes awarded to the top performers. In order to win, all participants must perform original pieces," Petrow said. "Last year we had a fun group. It's a night of raw talent and diversity."
