Village Extends Property Tax Rebate Deadline Because of Weather
Posted on 12/15/2016

The dangerously cold winter weather has prompted the Village of Orland Park to extend its deadline for property tax rebate applications. Eligible village residents now have until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 to file their paperwork.

“We know that it’s hard for seniors and other people to get out when the weather is this dangerous and we didn’t want anyone to miss out on the rebate,” said Mayor Dan McLaughlin. “This way, those who cannot physically get to the village hall and who don’t know how to apply online can come in early next week to file their applications.”

As of December 15, 14,700 of the estimated 20,000 eligible homeowners had filed for the rebate.

One on one assistance with rebate applications will be available in the lobby of Orland Park’s village hall, 14700 South Ravinia Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 15, 16 and 20.

The Orland Park Village Board began rebating property taxes in 2003 and has returned $38.9 million dollars to village residents 12 of the last 15 years. Rebate payments will be distributed in mid-March to eligible village residents who apply before the December 20, 2016 deadline.

On Thursday, December 15, a recorded message from the mayor was sent to the village’s 10,000 Code Red Alert System subscribers both about the extended rebate deadline and reminding people about the Orland Park Police Station being the village’s primary warming center.

“We wanted people to know that they don’t have to race to the village hall in this weather to get their paperwork in and we want everyone to know that the police station is available if people need a warm place to go,” McLaughlin said.

During the recording, the mayor asked residents to check on senior and disabled friends and neighbors during the extreme weather.

“Orland Park residents are great at looking out for each other,” the mayor said. “It only takes a few minutes to pick up the phone or knock on the door to check on neighbors who might be having a hard time with the cold temperatures. Ask if they’re okay. Maybe they need something from the store or just a friendly face stopping by to say hello.”
