ComEd Smart Meters

As of May, 2015 - ComEd's Smart Meters Coming to Orland Park
Smart meters are coming to Orland Park. The Village of Orland Park has learned that ComEd is scheduled to begin installing smart meters in the Orland Park area beginning in May. This is part of a $2.6 billion infrastructure investment on the part of the utility to modernize its grid.

Smart meters are digital and use two way radio communication to collect usage information, securely transmitting it to ComEd through a wireless connection. Smart meters give customers access to information about energy use through online energy management tools that help customers manage their electric bills.

Smart meters also automatically send meter readings to ComEd, eliminating estimated bills and reducing operating costs that are reflected in savings on customers’ electric bills. ComEd first notified Orland Park customers about the change in meters via a bill insert in February. A post card will be sent 60 days before installation with a letter arriving 30 days prior. An automated call will be made the week before.

Commercial and industrial meters will also be installed beginning in May 2015. The installation of 13,254 meters is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2015.

Residents will not be required to be home if ComEd representatives can access the meter. One week prior to installation, ComEd will call homeowners to tell them when they are scheduled for installation. Installations will take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. and are expected to take about 10 minutes to complete. During installation, residents should expect a brief interruption in electric service.

ComEd will send Orland Park residents more information through the mail about smart meters and the installation process. The remainder of the installations is expected to be completed in 2016.
