Recreation and Parks Provides an Update Regarding Programs and Services

Moving from COVID-19 response to recovery, and returning to fun

Orland Park, IL (May 22, 2020) – Summer is just around the corner and normally the Village of Orland Park would be bustling with activities including day camps, swimming, softball leagues, and outdoor special events. Normally, our parks are filled with kids at the playgrounds and friendly games of tennis, pickleball, and basketball. We hope to get back to this soon.

The Village of Orland Park Recreation and Parks Department is closely following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and local agencies as it pertains to public parks and recreation activities and facilities. We are awaiting further direction from these agencies in order to make appropriate decisions on which activities we will be able to offer this summer. The Orland Park Recreation and Parks Department is providing the following update regarding programs and services.

Recreation and Parks programs and services are subject to change as a result of the  COVID-19  outbreak. Please visit our website (www.orlandpark.org) and social media sites for current updates.

Summer Program Guide

The Village’s Summer Recreation Program Guide is now online. The Guide has been modified to accommodate existing mandates. Resident registration is now available for June, July and August programs. Non-resident registration will begin on May 29.

At this time, summer program registration will only be accepted online at www.orlandpark.org, by U.S. mail, e-mail or by dropping off completed forms, with payment, in a Recreation & Parks Department drop-box located at:

  • Recreation and Parks Department, 14600 Ravinia Avenue
  • Cultural Center, 14760 Park Lane
  • Sportsplex, 11351 West 159th Street

Programs run virtually in June will be marked accordingly in the program guide. Once new guidelines  are released by officials for public gatherings, Village staff will be able to modify our programs accordingly. These modifications may include limiting participants per offering.

Centennial Park Aquatic Center (CPAC)

Some suburban park districts have already announced the season closure of their public pools. We have decided to delay our decision until more information can be obtained. All pool operations are suspended until we receive additional guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). At that time, we will evaluate the situation and make a decision. Please visit our website (www.orlandpark.org) and social media sites for current updates.

Summer Camps

According to Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois Plan, limited summer programs will be allowed to open with IDPH approved safety guidance beginning on May 29. As soon as this IDPH guidance is made available, Village staff will post appropriate summer camp offerings on our website.

Special Events Rescheduled

The following special events have been rescheduled:

  • The Market at the Park: Originally scheduled to run June 4 - July 23, the market is being rescheduled to run July 2 - August 20, while incorporating updated guidelines provided as a result of COVID-19.
  • Concerts in the Park: The June 28 concert at Crescent Park is being rescheduled for September

6. The July 12 concert at Crescent Park will remain as scheduled.

Planning and preparations for the Taste of Orland Park, and Centennial Park West Concert Series are ongoing.

Veterans Liberty Run/Walk

This run/walk, scheduled for July 3, will become an all-day event allowing participants to run/walk the race route at any time during the course of the day on July 3. Participation includes the highly touted Veterans Liberty Run race shirt.

Fourth of July Fireworks

Some communities have already announced the cancellation of their Fourth of July Fireworks. Orland Park will be having a Fourth of July Fireworks display. The only item that is yet to be finalized is the extent of events that will occur at Centennial Park. At this point, the Village anticipates hosting a Fourth of July concert at Centennial Park, with appropriate social distancing measures. Regardless of whether events will occur at Centennial Park, a fireworks display will proceed, weather depending. This year, the fireworks will be modified so that the pyrotechnics will occur at a higher aerial level so that it can be seen throughout the community. The show will begin at 9:30p.m. and will be live streamed via the Village’s YouTube channel. Please visit our website (www.orlandpark.org) and social media sites for current updates.
