The Village of Orland Park will begin celebrating America’s birthday on Sunday, June 28 with the return of The City Lights Orchestra. The free outdoor concert will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the 12-acre Centennial Park West in the Colette Highlands Subdivision near 159th and 108th Avenue, at Park Station Boulevard and Somerglen Lane.

Rich Daniels and The City Lights Orchestra have been entertaining audiences across the nation since 1974 with their renditions of everything from the Beatles to the Big Band Era to Sinatra to Motown.

“Orland Park’s July 4th celebrations go back decades with the community gathering to celebrate our great country,” said Mayor Dan McLaughlin, one of the concert sponsors. The concert is also sponsored by the University of Chicago Medicine, the Music Performance Trust Fund and the Orland Park Prairie Newspaper.

“We’re happy to be able to open the week with a great show by The City Lights Orchestra and then come together again later in the week for the Liberty Run on Friday and another concert and fireworks on July 4th,” the mayor said.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, umbrellas, picnics, blankets and refreshments to enjoy the village’s newest outdoor entertainment venue.

Concessions, provided by Coopers’ Hawk Winery and Restaurant, will be available for purchase throughout the evening. Free parking will be available at the adjacent Metra station with shuttle buses transporting attendees from the parking lot to the concert site.

“We invite everyone to come to Centennial Park West to enjoy The City Lights Orchestra,” said Trustee Pat Gira, chair of the village’s Recreation Committee. “Bring your lawn chairs, picnics, refreshments, blankets and friends for a wonderful way to begin the holiday week in Orland Park,” she said.

Orland Park’s celebration continues on Friday, July 3 at 7 p.m. when the village’s Recreation Department hosts its annual Liberty Run/Walk at Centennial Park. The Liberty Run/Walk is a 2-mile, chip timed race or one mile walk through Centennial Park. All participants receive race shirts, free admission to Centennial Pool on July 3 or 4, post-race refreshments and an entry into the post-race raffle drawings. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finisher overall and in each age group. A Kids’ Run for Fun 50 Yard Dash will take place during the event, starting at 7:30 for ages four to eight.

The cost for the 2-mile Liberty Run is $14 for village residents and $20 for non-residents. Registration fees for the one-mile Liberty Walk are $8 for village residents and $12 for non-residents.

Advanced registration is required for the Liberty Run/Walk and is available at Recreation Administration, 14600 South Ravinia Avenue and at the village’s Sportsplex 11351 West 159th Street. Call the Recreation Department at 708/403-7275 with questions.
