Teen Citizens’ Police Academy Returns June 4 and June 5

ORLAND PARK, IL -- The Orland Park Police Department invites local teens to enjoy a free, two-day look at local law enforcement. The department will offer its Teen Citizens’ Police Academy Tuesday, June 4 and Wednesday, June 5. The program introduces young adults to a number of the department's programs and responsibilities.

"The teen police academy is a great way for young people to learn more about the Orland Park Police Department," said Trustee Pat Gira, chair of the village's Public Safety Committee. "This is also a great opportunity for those considering law enforcement as a career to get a firsthand look at one of the best police departments in the State of Illinois," she said.

The teen academy will be held on Tuesday, June 4 and Wednesday, June 5, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, at the Orland Park Police Department, 15100 South Ravinia Avenue. The academy is open to anyone age 14 to 20.

Participants must pass basic background checks and space is limited. Orland Park residents are given priority. If space becomes available, the academy will be open to non-residents.

"We are very excited to again offer an academy for young adults," said Orland Park Police Chief Tim McCarthy. "They'll get to see the many facets of the departments and learn how public safety is conducted in Orland Park."

Participants will learn about recruiting, training, dispatch, patrol, K9, traffic enforcement/DUI, internet investigations, and more.

The Teen Citizens' Police Academy will consist of two eight-hour sessions with lunch provided by the Village of Orland Park. Those who complete the academy will receive certificates.

Applications are available https://orlandpark.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=14039858&pageId=15013190 or by calling the Orland Park Police Department Investigations Division at 708/364-8149.
